The Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu nomination and appointment process is being undertaken to appoint a Ngāi Tahu representative to the Nelson/Marlborough Fish and Game Council.

Functions of the Fish and Game Council

  • To manage, maintain, and enhance the sports fish and game resource in the recreational interest of anglers and hunters.
  • To maintain and improve the sports fish and game resource.
  • To promote and educate.
  • To assess, develop and represent the region's interests in the determination and distribution of levies on licences.
  • To represent, formulate and prepare draft management plans, annual operational work plans the regions sports fish and game requirements for research.
  • To liaise with local Conservation Boards.
  • To issue licences to hunt or kill game and sports fish.

Purpose of the role

The purpose of this role is to represent the Ngāi Tahu perspective to the Nelson/Marlborough Fish and Game Council ensuring that any issues of tribal significance are reported to Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu while also ensuring that tribal matters of significance are represented to the Council.

Required skills, experience and qualifications

  • An interest in fish and game, preferably a licensed sports fisher and/or game bird hunter.
  • Knowledge of freshwater fisheries, game bird hunting matters.
  • Knowledge of the various water bodies within the region.
  • An understanding of Ngāi Tahu values as they relate to Fish and Game functions, and an ability to promote and articulate these values.
  • A willingness to understand and promote the undertakings contained in the Deed of Settlement in relation to Fish and Game Councils.
